The 2014 Tristarc Stakes has been run and won by Sweet Idea at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon. In a fighting second place was Girl Guide, followed by Catkins.
The race was tightly contested the entire trip, with Tommy Berry maintaining the pace on Sweet Idea out the front. Diamond Drille and Girl Guide had very good jumps from the barriers, setting themselves up in decent positions early on.
In the early stages Politeness settled into mid field, followed by Chiquada, May’s Dream and Girl In Flight.
Sweet Idea was well out the front sitting on the rail, with Enquare, Catkins and Girl Guide staying close the whole way. Steven Arnold brought Diamond Drille up into contention at around the 600. As they turned into the straight Girl Guide began her move down the outside just a touch too late.
Even though she was clearly tiring at the end Sweet Idea was able to hold onto the lead all the way to the line.
In fourth was May’s Dream, followed by Politeness and Girl In Flight. Enquare was last over the line.
Prior to kickoff this morning Sweet Idea and Catkins were well backed by punters, with the two fighting for the favourite position. Robert Smerdon’s Politeness wasn’t far off on the second line of betting.
Minnie Downs went into the race as one of two definite outsiders, starting at $51, before swinging out to $81 in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au. Apprentice hoop Regan Bayliss said prior to the race that he was “happy enough riding in the Group 2, but to be riding in the Caulfield Cup will be amazing.” Bayliss will partner outsider Renew from barrier 2 in the $3 million Caulfield Cup this afternoon.
