Talented mares Catkins, Diamond Drille and Sweet Idea have all been included in the 2014 Tristarc Stakes nominations that were released by Racing New South Wales this afternoon.
Sweet Idea is set to return to mares company for the first time since she finished second in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) earlier this year after racing against the males throughout her 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign.
The Snitzel mare resumed with a tough win in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on August 9 and she finished a tough second behind Dissident in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 30 before she was fourth in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at the same venue on September 28.
Catkins started her spring preparation with a comfortable two and a half lengths win in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 13 and went into the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) as a clear favourite, but suffered an upset defeat at the hands of Arabian Gold.
The Dubawi mare is still chasing a maiden win at Group 1 level and is set to progress to the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day after running in the Tristarc Stakes on Saturday.
Diamond Drille defeated the likes of Gypsy Diamond, Red Tracer, Streama and Catkins to win the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, but produced a poor performance first-up in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) and was found to be suffering from the thumps.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse gave Diamond Drille a two week stint in the spelling paddock and she remains hopeful that the Al Maher gelding can return to her best form in the Tristarc Stakes.
The only other Group 1 winner in the 2014 Tristarc Stakes nominations is Darren Weir-trained May’s Dream, who has impressed over shorter trips during her spring preparation.
May’s Dream resumed with a promising seventh in the Group 3 Sprint Series Heat Two (1200m) at Caulfield on September 20 before she ran home strongly to finish third in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on October 4.
Catkins, May’s Dream, Diamond Drille and Sweet Idea all have a significant ratings edge over the majority of the rest of their rivals in the Tristarc Stakes, but Politeness may be good enough to mix it with the leading mares.
Politeness resumed with a fourth place finish in the Sprint Series Heat Two before she charged home late after being ridden at the tail of the field in the Blazer Stakes.
Are There Any, Enquare, Scorpio Queen and Vibrant Rouge have also been included in the 2014 Tristarc Stakes nominations.
